'Always, the Peonies' is a one-of-a-kind expressive floral abstraction inspired by the artist’s enduring love of peonies — flowers that have marked some of the most meaningful moments of her life.

“Peonies featured throughout my wedding — in the arbour, bouquet, and table settings — drawn to their beauty, softness, and quiet strength,” says artist JoAnn Cutler.

That personal connection sits beneath the work, shaping its mood rather than its form.

Rather than depicting peonies literally, the painting approaches them through gesture, movement, and atmosphere. Edges dissolve, scale is exaggerated, and areas of negative space allow the composition to breathe. The flowers are suggested through rhythm and energy rather than described in detail.

Created using layers of acrylic, oil, ink, and subtle touches of imitation gold leaf, the surface moves between softness and intensity, light and depth — supporting a sense of presence without overpowering the composition.
